How to Prepare for a Tattoo Session

A great tattoo experience doesn't start when the needle hits your skin. It starts with how you prepare. Whether it's your first tattoo or your fiftieth, taking the right steps before your appointment makes the session more comfortable, helps the tattoo heal better, and ensures the best possible result.
Here's my guide to preparing for a tattoo session at Seventy Two Street Tattoo in Hull.
The Night Before
Get a good night's sleep. This might sound basic, but being well-rested genuinely affects how your body handles the tattoo process. When you're tired, your pain tolerance drops and you're more likely to feel lightheaded or uncomfortable during the session.
Avoid alcohol. I know some people think a drink might help with nerves, but alcohol thins your blood, which means more bleeding during the tattoo. More bleeding means the ink doesn't sit as cleanly in the skin, and it makes my job harder. Skip the drinks and you'll get a better result.
The Morning Of
Eat a proper meal before you come in. I can't stress this enough. Low blood sugar during a tattoo session is one of the most common reasons people feel faint. Have something substantial like eggs on toast, a bowl of porridge, whatever works for you. Just don't arrive on an empty stomach.
Hydrate well. Drink plenty of water throughout the morning. Hydrated skin is easier to tattoo and heals better. It's one of the simplest things you can do to improve the outcome of your tattoo.
Shower and moisturise the area being tattooed. Clean, well-moisturised skin is easier to work with. Just avoid applying heavy creams or lotions right before. Freshly washed skin is ideal.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. You'll be sitting or lying in one position for a while, so comfort is key. Also, studios can feel cool when you're sitting still for extended periods, so bring a jumper or hoodie just in case.
Bear in mind that tattoo ink can stain clothing. Wear something you don't mind getting a spot of ink on, especially if the tattoo is on your torso or thigh area.
What to Bring
Snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during longer sessions. Sweets, energy bars, and water are all good options
Headphones if you like listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while being tattooed
Your phone and charger for entertainment during breaks or longer sessions
A jumper or blanket, because comfort is everything
ID if it's your first visit, as I may need to verify your age
Your Skin Condition
Don't shave the area yourself before your appointment. I'll do this at the studio to ensure it's done properly and to reduce the risk of irritation. If you have sunburn on the area being tattooed, we'll need to reschedule. Sunburnt skin can't be tattooed safely.
Similarly, if the area has any cuts, rashes, or skin irritation, let me know before your appointment. We might need to adjust the placement or reschedule to ensure the best result.
Mental Preparation
It's natural to feel nervous, especially if it's your first tattoo. But remember, Seventy Two Street Tattoo in Hull is a welcoming, judgement-free space. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease from the moment you walk in. If you have any concerns at all, just talk to me. No question is too small.
Getting tattooed in Hull should be an enjoyable experience, not a stressful one. With the right preparation, it absolutely will be. If you have any questions before your session, reach out to me on Instagram, email, or WhatsApp. I'm always happy to help.
